    Some claim the Feast of Seven Fishes is rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition of eating fish on Christmas Eve instead of meat. Others consider this celebration a way to reconnect to their Italian heritage. Either way, it ends in a mouthwatering meal featuring yummy Italian seafood recipes! While native Italians still enjoy seafood on Christmas Eve, or "la vigilia," the tradition of avoiding meat and focusing solely on seafood is more common among Italian Americans.

    Usually, a Feast of the Seven Fishes menu includes seven different seafood dishes. However, each household celebrates differently. Some serve seven types of dishes; others serve 10-13. Some also believe each dish should feature a different type of seafood. Ultimately, you can decide how many Feast of the Seven Fishes recipes you serve.

    Native Italians still enjoy seafood on Christmas Eve, a tradition known as "la vigilia."     What are the original 7 fishes of Christmas Eve?

    This celebration does not actually include seven fish. Instead, you'll see traditional seafood and fish options often seen on a Feast of the Seven Fishes menu. These traditional ingredients include salt cod, shellfish, squid, conch, clams, and eel. However, you do not have to stick to these ingredients and can use other fish or seafood you and your family prefer.
